Tim McGovern

As an Edina Hornet, Tim McGovern earned seven letters in three sports – football, basketball and baseball. What makes Tim’s athletic career special is that he accomplished great things with a disability – the vision in his right eye was an uncorrectable 20/100 due to a birth defect. Even with impaired vision, Tim played three positions in sports that require excellent peripheral vision – defensive back in football, point guard in basketball and shortstop in baseball. Tim led Edina’s Legion baseball team to two straight state championships, two straight World Series appearances, and the Legion World Championship in 1983. Tim attended Creighton University in Omaha on a Division 1 baseball scholarship, and earned a starting position as a freshman. Tim lives in Bloomington with his wife Lori and son Tyler.

Stephanie Daudt Richards

Stephanie excelled in the classroom and on the athletic fields (and slopes) of Edina, earning an amazing 14 Varsity letters, and being a member of seven of Edina’s 155 State Championship teams. In the fall, Stephanie was a diver where she competed in three state championships, then took to the ski slopes in the winter where she was a captain and earned All-State and MVP honors. After the snow melted Stephanie took to the lacrosse field where she contributed to a state championship in 2002, and was also a gymnast on the Competitive Cheer team. Stephanie even found time to compete in waterskiing in the summer. Even after fracturing one of her vertebrae while tumbling for her cheer team, she competed on the Northwestern University ski team. Stephanie traveled the furthest to be here this evening – she and her husband live in Hong Kong where she is an Executive Director at Goldman Sack’s. 

Benjamin Stafford

Ben has earned his place in legacy of Edina Hockey – he was a three year Varsity letterman. He and his teammates were three-time Section Champions and finished third in the state tournament in 1995, second in 1996 and were state champions in 1997 where Ben earned All-conference, Team MVP and All-Tournament team honors. Ben’s dedication to the rink and the classroom led him to Yale University. In four years at Yale, Ben amassed 110 points while on the hockey team. After graduating Yale, Ben played professional hockey. Ben was aptly nicknamed by his teammates as the golden citizen, because he did everything right. After retiring from hockey, Ben joined the United States Marine Corps, helping in the war on Terrorism. Ben spent part of his first deployment in Iraq where he commanded a rifle platoon. A decorated combat veteran, Ben left the Marines and now lives in New York with his wife, Ali, and four kids.

Mike DeVoe

Mike played three varsity sports in high school, but is best known for his hockey skills. In the fall of 1981, Edina East and Edina West merged to form what is now known as Edina High School. That merge created a legendary hockey team and Mike was a key factor in that legacy. The newly combined team went on to win the 1982 State Championship in a 6-0 win. Fourteen players, including Mike, went on to play Division 1 hockey. Mike attended Harvard University where he studied Economics while participating in Hockey, Boxing and 2 days of Football. Mike and his wife Susan live in Edina with their three kids Jack, Elise and Clair. Mike continues to give back to the game he loves – he is currently the President of the Edina Hockey Association

Kristine Lund Sanow

On the snow, track or grass, Kristine was an extremely versatile athlete while at Edina High School. She earned 10 varsity letters, and earned the Athena Award in 1999. On her skis, Kristine helped earn three state championships, and a third place individual place in 1999. As the snow melted Kristine headed out to the track. Her performances earned her All-conference awards in 1997, 1998, and 1999. Her running continued in the fall as she applied her energy and talents to the Cross Country team. Kristine’s accomplishments extended into the classroom – she was a National Merit Scholar and name All-American Scholar in 1998. Kristine continued her athletic and academic success at Dartmouth College where she was co-captain of the Women’s Alpine ski team. Kristine went to medical school at the University of Minnesota and is a practicing OB/GYN at Diamond Women’s Center. Kristine and her husband William live in Edina with their three year old son, Austin.

Bob O’Connor

Bob is a lifelong student, teacher and fan of the game of hockey. A Rhode Island native, Bob was an all-state player in high school and went on to play hockey at Providence College. Following graduation he moved to Edina and felt right at home in the State of Hockey. Bob was the JV coach at Edina High School for 25 years and amassed an incredible record of 424-48-22. He served as assistant varsity coach with Bart Larson and Willard Ikola. After coaching in Edina, Bob moved on to work with USA Hockey and was the assistant coach for the 1984 and 1988 USA Olympic hockey teams. While his honors are too numerous to mention tonight, you can be assured that many fans here this evening have played in the EHA’s Bob O’Connor Tournaments throughout their hockey careers. Bob’s advice is simple – if it is to be, it’s up to me. Bob and his wife Alice live in Hopkins and enjoying watching their grandchildren play youth and high school hockey.

Dan Carlson

From the moment Dan stepped on the ice, he was a standout hockey player for Edina high school. He and fellow inductee, Ben Stafford, helmed the 1995, 1996 and 1997 state teams, clinching the title in ’97. Dan was names to the all-tournament team all three years, and was the Star Tribune’s All-metro player all three years. He was the metro player of the year in ’97 and a finalist for Mr. Hockey. When Dan finished his hockey career at Edina he did so as the all-time leading scorer for the Hornets. Dan continued his education and his game at the University of Notre Dame. Dan then continued his career in hockey playing in the East Coast League. In 2004 he packed his skates for Europe, eventually retiring in 2011 as the English Elite All-time leading scorer. Dan lives in Minneapolis with his wife Tara, and daughter Olive. He continues to skate as both a coach for the Minneapolis Storm and as a coach for Olive’s U-6 team.

Doug Galligher

In his 34 years at Edina High School, Doug had a positive impact on both students and athletes. Doug was the head coach of nine state championship teams. Doug remains the only Edina coach ever to win a Girls State Basketball title (in 1988), and coached the Hornets to three state track titles. Doug continued his streak of state tournament championships with the girls’ golf team. Between 1988 and 1997, Doug’s teams won 5 state championships. He had the opportunity to coach Kalen Anderson, Head Coach of the University of South Carolina, and Hilary Lunke, who won the US Open in 2003. Now retired, Doug splits his time between Lutsen and Florida. If you don’t find him spending time with his grandkids, he’ll be on the golf course, fishing or playing duplicate bridge.
